Call for Action for a multi-stakeholder collaboration to address Africa’s Used Lead Acid Batteries challenges

Call for Action!

PAN-Ethiopia and SRADev-Nigeria have initiated a Call for Action for a multi-stakeholder collaboration to address Africa’s Used Lead Acid Batteries (ULABs) challenges. The document highlights the urgent need for reform in the ULAB recycling sector, emphasizing the severe environmental and public health risks posed by inadequate recycling practices.

Originating from the ProBaMet Conference in Abuja, the initiative seeks to harmonize ULAB management across African nations through regulatory frameworks, best practices, and cross-border collaboration. Led by PAN-Ethiopia and SRADev-Nigeria, with support from experts and regulators, the document outlines key responsibilities for recyclers, governments, producers, and buyers, urging them to adopt industry standards aligned with the Basel Convention.

Improper ULAB disposal and recycling significantly contribute to lead pollution, posing serious health risks—especially to children. The Call for Action not only demands stricter regulations and responsible battery end-of-life management, but also advocates for a multi-stakeholder initiative to:

  • Support industry reforms
  • Facilitate policy alignment
  • Empower civil society and academia in mitigating lead exposure through research, advocacy, and knowledge exchange.
